Special Session on European Policies for Shipping, Ports and Maritime Supply Chains: JMC-EPP at ECONSHIP 2026

European Policies for Shipping, Ports, and Maritime Supply Chains: Special Session organised by the Jean Monnet Chair in European Port Policy, University of Piraeus & the Florence School of Regulation, European University Institute.

The JMC-EPP and the Florence School of Regulation, European University Institute, jointly organised a dedicated special session examining key developments in European shipping, port policy and maritime supply chains.

Chaired by the JMC-EPP Chair, Prof. Dr. Thanos Pallis, the session brought together contributions addressing different dimensions of the evolving European maritime policy landscape. The session explored the changing role of European ports as strategic assets, approaches to port value creation and the implications of the new EU Ports Strategy, including its relationship with the energy and sustainability transition. It also addressed the social dimension of port transformation, focusing on dockworkers, labour and labour relations, as well as the emerging challenges posed by the shadow fleet, its implications for crews and the European regulatory response.

  2. The value creation of ports revisited – Larissa, Van der Lugt, Elvira Haezendonck, Peter de Langen, Theo Notteboom (Belgium, France)
  3. The new EU ports strategy and the energy-sustainability nexus: Ambition, port realities and implementation – Charalampos Platias, Theodore Styliadis (Greece)
